Let’s start by saying E&I typically drink wine. We both once did only mixed drinks but evolved to wine and all that goes with it as wine is a great food thing. We will drink beer, but it is not our first choice. I say that because we are not a good basis to say if a beer is any good, nor will I comment on that, I know my place. But I asked the other day on Facebook places we should try, and Yoerge Beer & saloon was suggested, so we are reviewing it.
One of the things that amazed us about this smallish corner bar across the street from St Paul’s Metro state over-looking downtown St Paul is the sheer size of the beer menu. We have gone to perhaps 50 sit down beer, wine and restaurant type places in the metro and only Domacin Restaurant & Wine Bar of Stillwater has a beverage menu comparable to Yorge Beer. Both places have a dozen pages of beverage options. Domacin the king of wine options, Yoerg with 250 beers is the King of beer. Hey, I like that phrase, someone should use that.
I always take a picture of every page of every food and beverage menu we see every week so you too can get a clue. Now I could be totally wrong, some other place could have more options, I’m just saying with 250 Bavarian Beers Yoerg’s is vast and worthwhile the look.
I wish every food and beverage place had a sampler plate. Maybe just to get introduced to what they had to offer. Beer flights are fairly common, so we had one. Four beers, all good, but again, what do I know, I’m a wine guy. What I’m saying is flights of beer works so good how about take the next step and go to food.
At the State Fair we went our second time on Sunday after four when all of you should be at home only to meet with wall-to-wall people. We found the corn dog line 20 deep not too bad and ended up sneaking into the MN Wine Building. There they had a Flight of food! We had three sliders ALL small but great. We also had a flight of three wines, great combination for the fair.
So that was an issue at Yoergs we did not know what to order. So, we just went with Ciabatta bread plate which was very good for $4.95. Then the artisan Hook Cheddar Cheese plate for $14.95, which was not so artisan and a very good Usinger’s Black Forest Ham sammich for $9.95.
I just realized E had a 2021 California Blend Red Wine for $6.95 and I had a 2022 Italian Barbera Red for $7.95, that never made the bill. And they were good wines at a great price. Sorry you/we missed the wine not being on the bill.
Yoerg Beer is a small place that specializes in a huger variety of German Beers. If you want to be part of a piece of MN Beer history Yoerg Brewing company is a must see. They are the oldest beer place we have gone to. When they started, they were in Wisconsin Territory in 1848. Then when Wisconsin became a state that year the border was drawn at the St Croix and they became part of the Minnesota Territory which ten years later May 11, 1858, became a state.
The brewery was closed in 1952 with the death of the last surviving Yoerg son and brought back to life in 2016 for all of us to enjoy.
If you are looking for an interesting place to have a beer someday keep Yoerg on your must-see places to have a beer. If we are ever entertaining beer people it will be our go to place. BTW the bill was $49 (should have been $65) which included 4 beer samplers, 2 full wines, and the food, not bad, and the people and the place are fun.
