I can’t argue with anything they have said about their restaurant. We go to a new restaurant every Friday night. Some nights are incredible. And some nights like last week at Stepchld was OK. If you are in the area of the North Loop across from Surdyks and in back of Kramarczuks Sausage Company by St Anthony Main and Nicollet Island it is a good place to eat.
There are several good restaurants in the area. We happen to prefer All Saints a block away, but Stpchld is good too.
We could spend 30 minutes going through a menu when we go someplace, but that is not how most people do it, so we simply do not. Doing so would make these reviews work and we work enough. So, we have a new plan. We are going to look at the menu and see what looks good and unusual and ask our waiter/ress what it popular. E came up with four choices three of which were recommended as popular choices so three it was.
We ordered Sweet Potato Fritters. They looked like meatballs, but they were perhaps the most surprising food I have had in a long time. They were sweet potatoes with maple syrup, cayenne pepper & whipped goat cheese for $18, Had I closed my eyes I would have sworn they were my grandma’s potato pancakes. They were amazing.
Next, we had wines. E had a Land of Saints Cab Sav from Chile for $16 and I had a Vina Sastra Roble Tempranillo from Arroyo Seco CA for $14. They were both good/ not great.
For main courses we had Ethiopian Birria Tacos with Beef, berbere spice, Monterey Jack, corn tortillas, white Onion, cilantro & pickled red onion for $18. I think we were served four and two we left. They were OK.
Finally, we ordered the Cooper Burger. A double smash patty, Mitmita, dill pickles, Cooper’s American Cheese, Onions and fries. That can be made with impossible meat, which we probably should have tried, for $19. It was a burger I don’t remember the last time I had a bad burger, it was good.
The service was good, the place was nice, we parked in the same block and felt safe thanks to the North Loop Merchants paying for extra security. And it was a good meal. Nothing to rave about but it was good. The total bill was $91.47. Stepchld is nothing to rave about but is an option if you are looking for something new.
