Many of the great new restaurants can be tough to get reservations for. Most only go out six weeks. So, E has a list that every week she tries to get a reservation six weeks out. Starling was on the list a couple of weeks so getting a reservation at Starling could be eight weeks out if you go primetime Friday night at 7 like us.
Starling is just off Hwy 100 & 50th just north of 494 and next to the Edina Country Club. They offer $10 valet parking more for a convenience than a need for that peaceful part of town. It’s about fifteen minutes from downtown where we start our Friday night excursions from. We were early for our 7:15 reservations and were asked to sit at the bar and were seated 3 minutes before our reservation. Can’t ask for any better.
As we were seated in this classy restaurant we noticed a wedding party of 16 young ladies next to us. E looked at me and said: “give them a chance.” They were the most perfect table in the place. No giggling and taking a ton of selfies as we have seen with many wedding parties at wineries in the area. They did all get up midmeal and went outside for a group photo. Any guy that was deep in his conversation in the place magically had his head turned for the classy parade. And they were ALL perfect ladies!
Where was I… oh yea.. Starling!
I was talking earlier in the evening about the few Syrahs available lately. And what came up on the wine menu but a Syrah from Argentina no less. So, for wine I had a Syrah/Malbec for $12 from Argentina. E had a Cab Sav from Dunnigan Hills CA for $13. Both were good with good pours. MINE was better, said both E&I… OK sometimes we don’t agree.
Food at Starling is served whenever the food is fresh & ready. That might mean you will get your salad AFTER your entree. We/our stomachs are traditionalist so we ordered one item at a time. That also means like the table next to us everyone gets served at a different time. We are fine as long as you know.
The menu had a good combination of traditional items. We went with the traditional American burger for $18 and an order of fries for $10 which we split. Being summer neither of us were very hungry and debated quitting at that. But that doesn’t make for much of a review. So, we forced ourselves to add an order of Green Curry Walleye cooked with salt & Pepper (S&P from those of us that once flipped burgers for a meager living) coconut curry, cabbage salad, tomato, herbs and Jasmine rice. No forcing us to eat it, god was it good! Order it if you go there!
E & I were discussing serving sizes. And we are wondering either restaurants are increasing serving sizes for the growing of America OR like we always do, they are providing entrees to feed two. Either way there was a lot of food.
Starling was a traditional quiet place to dine. There was a table an arm’s length from us and I could not tell you one of their conversations. A peaceful meal for everyone.
Our bill was $89 that should not break anyone’s bank. One note this is a sister restaurant from the New Butcher & Board in Minneapolis, a place that is on our list. If you haven’t heard any of my restaurant bathroom stories, read a few of my reviews. Starling has an interesting way to offer hand drying towns from a post office box type dispenser, sure beat pulling them from a pile. Class that is expected in Edina. If you want to try a good upscale new trendy place, give Starling a try, we enjoyed it.
