St Marys Greek Festival

We go to a lot of festivals and church events. One of the reasons we do is for unique food and customs. We like to keep an open mind.  Some people shy away from Greek Food because lamb can be a unique taste but St Marys staff does a great job of making everything Minnesota pallatable.

People don’t know where St Marys Greek Orthodox Church is until you tell them it’s the beautiful Gold Dome church over looking Lake Calhoun on the south east shore. Then you hear “Oh THAT beautiful Place, I have always wanted to go there!” Well you should.

We went the first time about ten years ago when we were looking for unique things to do on weekends. Yes St Marys is a Greek Orthodox Church but the public is welcome. Especially every year the weekend after Labor Day weekend.

St Marys has one of two major Greek Festivals in the Twin Cities. The other one is at St George in St Paul in late July. St Marys is much bigger, both are great.

St Mary’s is a three day festival. If you are going for the first time please go on Saturday, we did Buenoes Aires Food this year on Friday night to watch the football opener. Saturday night was packed this year. But we don’t need more people on Friday night when we go.
For a church based event there are few in the cities run better. The parking sucks, but hey with all the delishous foods and pastries a little walk wont hurt you.

If you have never had Greek food accept it will be a little different. Close your eyes if you must and enjoy. To give you an idea think meat and soft taco shells with plenty of spices.

I rarely admit it but Saturday night at 7 when we went the food lines were 30 minutes long. And after two soccer games, a pool party and an art show earlier in the day a thirty minute wait was a bit much for their great food. So this year sadly we passed.

The wine is always great, though limited varies they are always  good and reasonably priced. And the view and church at St Marys is unequaled in the Twin Cities.

There is also a marketplace to buy spices, jewelry, clothes and accessories. Bring your Credit Card.

The people are very nice and there is an abundance of staff and church people to help you out.

If you want to bring your kids and they are well mannered, they too are welcome. They can get involved in Greek Dance and learn some of their customes. There is always greek music playing. It’s an incredible atmosphere.
We will be there next year on Friday night, hope to see you on Saturday.
