Tonight we are at Spasso. We have been here two or three times before. I finally figured out why I don't have rave reviews of the place. The place is an average place to eat with a better than average wine list. But what get's in the way all the time, ever so strange is the name.
I associate the name Spasso with SpaGo the go to place for the rich and well placed in life. Spago of Beverly Hills, Spago of Vega, Spago of Maui are instantly thought of as great venues, Spasso is just average. Just because it is not logical, doesn't mean I still don't feel that way.
We went there Friday, Feb 17, kinda Valentines day. The place was full but our reservations were honored and on-time. It being Tonka, Spasso has a nice safe parking lot and is easy to get to. We were immediately seated directly next to some of our friends from the Wayzata Wine Club, which was fun. The wine list is one of the best things about Spasso they have FIFTEEN Reds by the glass and a ton more by the bottle. E had the Daou Cab '21 from Paso and I had the Trig Point Merlot '20 from Sonoma both about $10 VERY reasonable for red wine.
For an appetizer we ordered a poached pear salad with goat cheese, toasted almonds and red wine reduction for $12 it was VERY good. Next we ordered Polenta Fries, which were kinda like steak fries for $9 about 1" square by 5" long. I thought the inside tasted like my grandma's potato pancakes. E was unimpressed. Lastly we had Lasagna for $24 which was good. So we spent $45 in food $21 in wine for a bill of $71.50 which was not bad.
The service was fine and the food was good & well priced, we were just not wow'd by anything. Spasso is a fine restaurant just don't expect greatness.
