Day 12 Mykonos: An island perhaps nicer than Santorini, May 16, 2025 NCL Viva

I’m trying to write 4-6 pages a night on our travels. That means working a few hours at 2AM in the morning. I enjoy doing it and daily I get thanks from our readers and questions about our travels tomorrow. Last night I did two restaurant reviews and at 2AM I was dreaming of grouse hunting with my dogs, E and my grandkids. So, I’m doing my Mykonos review before doing my previous day review on Santorini that is about half done and I may revisit.

After six months of planning, checking FB Groups and You Tube videos we kind of knew what we were doing through half the cruise through Santorini. Mykonos we simply were going to walk around town. And we did that, but Mykonos was a much better day than we ever expected.

Ever spent a week in North Dakota as I did four years at Minot AFB? If so, you will be right at home at Mykonos. If you have a hat without a chin string, please take a picture of it before you go outside. For that is the last you will see of your hat. There is SERIOUS wind in Mykonos and it is regular not just today.

NCL again did a great job of telling what to expect and it was easy even for us. A block or so off the ship was a water taxi to the old downtown port. It was 2 Euros or $3 US we LOVED giving up our greenbacks. Double that for round trip. Yes, we paid an extra $1 each way for two of us and we hope they have fun with the $4, thanks for taking greenbacks!

We chose the water taxi to downtown because we did not walk the two miles, 3 Km to downtown. We still had to walk .5 Mile to the boat, but it was on a nice dock. A land taxi would have been 40 Euro. We are CHEAP Americans we prefer $12 round trip is fine. Besides we are with OUR PEOPLE!

We docked at Mykonos Greece at 7Am. We ate breakfast for the day without plans. Our day sheet just said walk the town. We left the ship at 10:15A with a whole lot of people that weren’t fighting to get off. We were at the downtown shopping center by 11AM.

Upon leaving the ship we saw a nice sign that said Mykonos, Greece Guests be back at 4:30PM. Which we love that NCL would make sure we all knew before we left, no questions. We walked outside off the dock and saw a nice guy holding a sign that said Water Taxi 2 Euros. I don’t know if NCL set this up, but it was EXACTLY what an uninformed tourist needed. It was great. At the ticket booth I asked if they would take US $ they said sure, $3 not 2 Euro. I said THANKS I need 2 round trips, $12 later we had transportation to/from downtown for the day.

The actual water taxi boat was a handful of blocks down the pier… follow the people line. We got on the double decker water taxi, top being outside and were off in a matter of minutes. Thirty minutes after walking off the ship we were downtown.

We have been to a lot of cities in foreign countries. In Mykonos we did not see a MAJOR police presence and yet we felt VERY SAFE! The streets were clean as were all the shops. I love it when I walk off a boat and see a Snickers Sign… means the civilized world is Welcome here. Stupid, eh?

The shops and shopping were totally different than in those countries that did not take $. That may be stupid, or just an observation. We have No problems getting Euros, as long as you can tell us How Much? And WHERE can we BUY them when we Need THEM. There is no Money exchange or Euro ATM on the ship. And No one can tell us what we should bring from the states for the six countries we will be in.

All the Shops in Mykonos were clean and had NICE stuff. Not Once did any of the hundred shops we walked past say anything to try to get us to buy. And the PRICE was THE PRICE! The only problem we had was the walkways were just wide enough to get two people each direction and possibly an occasional motorcycle. And there was No steep hills, mules, steps or cable cars like in Santorini and the place was just as beautiful.

E somehow came down with a bit of a cold. We fight our colds back home by daily gargling with hydrochloric peroxide. Something a Navy dentist taught me a few years ago. I would argue it also eliminate tooth pain. We remain VERY healthy despite having two school kids bringing home every disease a school may have. Back home we spend about $2 a month for a bottle, and it keeps us amazingly healthy. But with E’s cold, I suspect from stress, we ran out of Hydrochloric Peroxide. So, we asked around at the stores and EVERY store owner was nice and in about ten minutes we had a full bottle in our hands for a few bucks… GREAT!

After the pharmacy who’s card I have included we continued to look for Little Venice a great dining area. We found out later it was just down the hill from the handful of windmills. Little Venice is simply a three to four block long area of restaurants one step from being in the sea.

I wrote a review of Baos the restaurant we ate at in Little Venice. There are 20 nice restaurants there. Then we walked up saw the windmills and started our shopping return to the water taxi. On the way E bought two bags for our grandkids to transport their boots to/from school for $25 each. And a few hats, about $100 left on the island.

We found the water taxi after the maze of streets and were back to MT ATE Pier and the Viva at 2:30 just in time for 3 PM Tea in the Hot tub… OK it was wine.

It was a great day, and everyone agreed, other than the wind, it was as beautiful as Santorini but better shopping and easier to get around. Don’t skip Mykonos as a minor port it is GREAT!
