Khans
We all have go to restaurants where we go to when we don’t know what we want to eat or want to make a decision. Khans is one of those restaurants for us. First time I went to Khans of then Dinkytown was in the 90s when I was designing supercomputers for Cray. The guys wanted an interesting place for lunch and me never knowing stir fry tagged along and was pleasantly fascinated.
Soon Khans added an additional restaurant in Roseville, close by. With the place sometimes not too busy we would chat with the owner and found out we had similar aged kids. We taught the bar tenders daughter Hunter Safety, so we kinda became a fixture there. We even took our son there on one of his first dates. He never got a bill for someone paid the bill for that young cute couple. Anyway, Khans is close to our hearts even today.
How does one describe Khan’s Mongolian Stir fry? First it’s a place that everyone can personalize their own food. And sit down to eating time they rival fast food restaurants with similar prices.
The concept at Khans is to grab a plate at the buffet. The buffet has about thirty items. You start with every type of meet except ostrich: beef, pork, chicken, veal, shrimp, fish and a bunch more. After the meat section of the buffet is the vegetable portion. They have cabbage, corn, carrots, potatoes, tofu and a few more. Add those to your plate. Lastly stop at the spicey sauces table to spice up your creation.
Then you move this overflowing plate of your design to the cooking area. Where four cooks on two grills cook your creation to perfection. Now these cooks are strategically located behind a huge three-foot gong. A gong you are to tap for good luck. Well unless we are there. The cooks are mostly Mexican and nice guys, say Hi when you are there. I honor them by yelling “Viva Me Hi Co!” and hitting the gong a bit louder than most. You’d know if you were there. The cooks acknowledge with a thank you.
The cooks will ask you if you want KaKa Watcus, that’s Peanuts for us English speakers. They can add them as part of the grilling. And when the cooks are done with your selection, they put them on a clean plate for you to return to your seat to indulge. By then your drinks should have arrived. We have had better wine, but they have good pours and it’s cheap.
The stir fry food is incredible and all of your design. I believe you can go back for seconds but it’s amazing how one plate can be, so we never have. I was asked the other day where was a nice close place to take hungry teenagers while in town. Being just north of Rosedale Khans on Cty C & Snelling is close to both downtowns.
The problem with writing about Khans is I’m hungry for it again. We used to go monthly and because each plate you build is unique and different sauces, every trip is different. And where else can two of you eat without sharing and each have a wine for about $60. That’s a bit more than fast food these days and it is way more healthy. We’ll be back… maybe monthly!
