One of the problems of going to a new restaurant every Friday night is sooner or later we run out of restaurants. When That happens what do we do? I simply go on Facebook and ask if there are any new restaurants that we should review. And we ALWAYS get a dozen suggestions, usually half of which we have been to, But we usually get a few we have never heard of that we will try. That is how we decided on Juche of St Paul this week.
There are certain areas of the city we and other avoid after hours. Payne Ave in St Paul is on the edge of that group. But we went anyway. Juche is a Korean restaurant, all too rare in the Twin Cities. So, if you are a fan of Kimchi, this is your place.
The decor was in a word interesting. It appeared all the walls were covered in a curtain type of material. The place was lit with purple and pink lights. Not our usual atmosphere but we don’t walk out of restaurants that we are getting served at. And the service was fine.
They had no wine, so I went with a lemonade… first for a Friday night for me. E stuck with water. The Lemonade was great.
Juche filled the spot that Cook restaurant left vacant in January. Juche opened in springer of 2023. And seems to be a local hangout more so than a destination. The place is small probably seats 25-30 people. That said we went on Friday night at 7 PM without reservations, were seated promptly and we saw no one left standing.
The menu is a simple one-page menu, which we prefer. One side is food, the other beverages, again, no wine. It is very rare that we do not know what to order, I remember no previous time. So, E chose the Salmon and rice with Chips. It was fine but left us hungry. Never having had Kimchi I asked for a small sample which our server provided. It was a vegetable (cabbage) with sauce. Nothing to write home about. I had two tastes. My South Dakota lady passed on it.
Still hungry we ordered a hamburger and fries. That they hit out of the park, it was a very good burger and fries. Juche seems to be a place you might go after bar closing or with a nice small bar, drink there. The kitchen is open until midnight.
Our bill for this interesting food was $38.11 cheap even for St Paul!
