Every year after the Superbowl is the coldest month of the year after winter has been enjoyed enough. E absolutely hates it. So, I suggested this year we take a weekend and go to Jamaica. We were going to Fly out on Friday morning and return on Sunday for three days in the sun. Well best laid plans.

If we go next year, we will add a day or two to our trip. We got up at 3AM and got to Jamaica at 3 PM through Carolinas. THEN the trip got rough! We spent 3+ hours for the $50 cab ride to get about 50 miles to Negril. Negril is where the best beaches are in Jamaica. There is ONE road in Jamaica between Montego Bay airport to Negril and it is along the coast. We found out there were a few shortcuts. These are taken if the driver needs to pick up his shoes being repaired or say hi to a relative or GF. Let’s just say it was a Jamaican experience.

Our destination hotel was Hedo. Why Hedo? It’s all inclusive and adults only. There are a handful of those destination hotels in the Caribbean, but this one is an upscale “Party Hotel” and hey we were planning this since September to get out of the 30 below tempos that had it’s grips on the Midwest…. Well, this year not so much.
The trip from Montego Bay Airport to Negril is on a nice three lane road. Not three lanes as we think of in the Midwest. One lane Left side driving, a return lane going the other direction and a center lane we called the deadmans lane because it’s a passing lane going both directions at the same time. In a word the 3-hour taxi drive on a Friday night is stressful.
We learned later that a Sunday return trip on the same road is about half as long. Avoid Friday and Monday, the busy days and you will thank yourself. Oh, and it’s twice as much to get back to the airport as to get to the hotel. It’s a math thing we don’t understand.
The hotel had good selection of food and drink. Friday night we had lobster on the grill or were they shrimp… you get the idea. They and the rest of the meal were good. The average age was 50 plus of the people in the hotel. And since it is an all exclusive the drinks are free. We saw no one drunk. Even though The Jägermeister and Fireball were at the edge of the bar with coffee, pour your own dispensers.
We had a good time and would return. But as we sat on the beach, we watched a small plane fly into an airport a mile away. We would avoid the 3-hour cab ride for an 18 minute small plane taxi for an extra $100 a piece.
