GSP Hunt Test GWPCTC Hunt test There are fifty dog clubs in the Twin Cities. We own Bird Dog & Retriever News www.Bdarn.com which is a publication that dates back to the early 1990s about upland birds, waterfowl and the people & dogs that hunt them. 

A portion of following bird hunters and their dogs qualifications is the testing of dogs. Most field dog clubs have one or two events in the spring and fall to test their people and dogs. On Sunday we went out to the German Shorthaired Pointer club of the Twin Cities. All pointing breeds can compete in any pointing breed tests. That said we only saw German Wirehairs, German Shorthairs and Brittany breeds there. 

There are two major types of bird dog events: Field Trials and Hunt Tests. With field trials there is one winner in each class of dogs, is very competitive and usually is run by the professional trainers and the people really into their dogs. 

The event on Sunday was a Hunt Test which means all dogs are tested or judged against a standard performance level. So all dogs could pass. In hunt tests everyone hopes everyone wins. 

We have titles on most of our dogs over the years. The Hunt tests have three levels: Junior, Senior and Master Hunter. At Junior you have fifteen minutes to find a bird in a hundred or so acre field and not bite anyone… LOL. In Senior you need to find the bird but wait for the hunter to shoot. In Masters the dog is asked to do incredible things expected of the top of the line dogs. If you can get a dog from this group of genetics you will be getting amazing bloodlines. But you get what you pay for. 

There are field trials & hunt tests most weekends from April to October within an hour of the twin cities. You should wear an orange top if you are going to leave the parking lot.
