Grays
Tonight we are in Dinkytown at Grays. Dinkytown is a commercial area a block off Uof M Mpls campus. Grays is the former Loring Pasta Bar which is a HUGE three story high Vaudeville show place that you could spend all night just looking at architecture and this eclectic place.
I have always been fascinated with the bathroom sink. It is the size of a timpani drum or a chicken defeathering pan when used to butcher chickens... now THATS a comparison. Anyway the whole place is just fun.
The wait staff are usually young college students many times doing their first time as a wait staff. Tonight we had Grace who fit the mold and was gracious yet bubbly.
The wine list had 17 reds and 7 whites. Reds start at $6, no where in the metro will you find a glass of wine so reasonable. E had an $8 Dark Horse Cab and I had a Frontera Malbec. Our wines were good. If you are new to wines don't worry they have Menage' to make you feel at hone. A nice addition to the list might have been countries & regions to the wine list that we look for.
The menu is in keeping with being by campus with pasta & burgers.
For and appetizer we ordered Hish Puppies for $6. I spent a year for the USAF on the Gulf Coast, these could use some work and were pretty bland.
For entrees I ordered an Ecuadorian Braised Pork for $12 and E had a Penne Carbonara for $12. The price was right!
My Ecuadorian Braised Pork was good and it came with the BEST Armadillo sauce I have ever had it was cheesy with a kick of peppers. They had potato cake Ecuadorian things called llapingacho's which were interesting. The sweet red peppers were very good. The black beans & rice could have been a meal by themselves. A great value for $12
E's Tomato Basil soup was home made and Very GOOD! Along with the penne's.
The bill was a reasonable $xx.
This is a great date place, very quiet and a lot of room between tables.

Have a cup of coffee, try some of our house-made specialties, read a book, catch up on homework, stay for happy hour, soak up the atmosphere, be inspired.
Or if you're in a hurry, our coffee and tea drinks as well as grab-n-go food are perfect fuel for your day.
Gray's values are reflected in everything we offer: local, sustainable, independent, and creative. That means local coffee roasts, compostable drink packaging, taps from small breweries, food made from scratch daily on the premises, partnering with other local businesses, and an eclectic roster of local artists and musicians.
We've seen the neighborhood transform over the decades. For over 100 years, our corner has been a pillar of Dinkytown since its inception: from the first streetcar terminal, a school supply company, one-time home to Bob Dylan during his "University student" phase, drugstore (Gray's Drugstore, that is), fine dining establishment and nightclub.
Gray's honors that history and continues a long-held tradition of serving the University of Minnesota community and beyond by providing a place to escape the sameness of fast food chains and corporate coffee shops. We are committed to doing our part in preserving historic Dinkytown.
