Tonight, we are at George & the Dragon, yea the name enticed us. It is everything we expected and more.
We are at an old English pub in the middle of south Minneapolis. The place seems like something that could fall out of a Dickens novel. The place, though smaller, is not unlike Brit’s Pub one of our favorites on Nicollet Ave downtown Minneapolis.
Though it would appear to be a beer type pub, they have a good selection of good wines, eleven in all. Tonight, we both drank California Red wine’s E her Cab Sav by Katherine Goldschmidt and I had Doris Zin blend, both were good not great wines.
For an appetizer we started with pretzel bread with home made butter for $4 it was as good as it sounds. Through the entire evening, though we never once mentioned being rushed, all the food came out fast, the pretzel within 5 minutes of ordering, yet it was fresh & hot, and the home-made butter melted into it at first touch. It was probably one of the better pretzels we have ever had. Not to even compare it to those brown things from the state fair.
For entrée’s E had a steak sandwich and I had the English mainstay for a thousand-years Fish & Chips. Both were on our table fifteen minutes after we were seated, and both had great portions and were very good.
We normally get 7 PM reservations which can affect the crowd we see. Many of the younger set do happy hour first then go out after eight. George & the dragon is definitely a neighborhood place to dine there were few families, which we rarely see anyways where we dine but a good number of the 50+ older crowd.
Our bill with two wines, two entrées and the pretzel were a very reasonable $65. It’s a nice place worthwhile a visit.

From their website: Our Story
We started working on George and the Dragon in the summer of 2011. Driven by our desire to work with people we enjoy in a laid back yet professional environment while creating fabulous food, we left our long term jobs in the restaurant industry to set out on our own
George and the Dragon is modeled after an English pub or public house. Back in the day, the pub was more than a place to get a beer. It was also a gathering place for the community, a place for a traveler to get a room for the night, and of course the place to enjoy a delicious home cooked meal whether you were a guest passing through town or a local treating yourself to a night out. It is our hope that George and the Dragon will grow to be such a gathering place in the hearts of the people in our community.
Our philosophy about food is very simple. Everyone deserves great food. We source our ingredients with these things in mind: great taste, local products from family owned businesses, and all natural or organic. The dishes on our menu are the kind of food we believe people would make at home if they had the time. We have brought pub classics as well as our own cherished family recipes for guests to enjoy.
