Periodically we all have friends and relatives that come to town. And we look for a place to impress them to eat that is not too pricey. Well, we discovered Firelake Grill House and Cocktail Bar in the Radison Blu in the Mall of America is just that place. Was it your typical place we look for with AMAZING food? Nope. But the place looks incredible, has good food, though E called it hotel food, it is convenient and will impress some of your guests.

A handful of times a year we will walk into a place and say WOW. Firelake Grill house is one of those places. You can drop your guests off at the front door of the hotel to be greeted by the doorman and they can enter the amazing looking hotel. Then you can park in the garage under the hotel and take your ticket they validate.

Or better yet if your friends are in town and aren’t staying with you, perhaps they might want to stay at the Radison Blu at the Mall of America. That or if you don’t want the airport drive in the morning of an early flight. You can enter the MOA without going outside from the Radison, it’s a unique hotel. The décor of the Radison is impressive, a place you might expect sports teams and celebrities to stay at. Rates start at $270 a night and includes a place to put the things you bought at the MOA.

E heard about the place from local media, it looked interesting, so she booked it. E and I make no claims of an Le Cordon Bleu education or palate. We were raised on Friday Fish Fries in WI & SD. That said we enjoy good, interesting food. There is absolutely nothing wrong with the food at Firelake. But E perhaps said it best by calling it hotel food. Not unlike the fish frys we both grew up on. If you expect amazing food, this is not your place. If you want good food that is convenient Firelake will fit your bill.

As I have said the walk up to the second-floor restaurant is impressive. The restaurant is huge with plenty of space between tables. The place is quiet and a nice place to eat on a Friday night. The staff was good.

Like many local restaurants as of late Firelake has an association with about thirty local farms and producers. You are going to get food from some amazing sources.

Firelake has an impressive wine selection with an entire wall of bottles. For wine by the glass as we drink with our meal, they have more than a dozen. Followed by a great selection of beers and mixed drinks. E had a Caymus Cab for $27, it was Caymus how could it NOT be good. I had a good $16 Italian Nebbiolo.

The menu is limited but a nice size. We started with Popovers for $9 which were good and about double the size of a fist for $9. Then we had an order of Walleye cakes for $15 which again were good but not great, then we had a big bowl of wild Rice soup for $11. It was big enough it was one of the rare times we actually took food home and it was a treat for a Saturday afternoon watching football by the fire. Finally, we had an order of Fish & Chips for $22 again it was good but not to die for.

Our bill was exactly $100 add the local taxes in it was $111. A little bit high for just good food. But it was a convenient & interesting place. Not a place we would return to, but we are glad we went.
