We typically go to two paid wine events a month. That is in addition to tasting every Friday night at North Loop. On October 9th we were in the basement at Haskels of Minnetonka (Across from Ridgedale), for a tasting from Ethica Wines. Ethica is a regional Italian Wine Importer. So we were getting wines from the same region of Italy but from different wineries. The cost for a tasting of this type is about $25 each and that usually includes bread, cheese and fruit. The event normally lasts about an hour and there is always a markdown on the wines if you buy them at the class.
If you are new to wines, it is a great way to learn about wines and the entire process. We have been tasting wines for ten years and I don’t remember an event we did not learn something. There is SO much to learn about wine, yet just drinking it is easy.
We had seven wines at the tasting. Seven seems to be the limit of one’s palate after seven your tongue is numb in addition to other things. We went from very sweet almost syrupy Mimosa type of wine to some very good vintages.
The presenter spent about 5 minutes explaining each wine before we drank it. This allowed us to know what tastes the wine should have, with wine there are dozens of tastes, it is absolutely amazing to taste leather and citrus, and smokey flavor from a grape growing from the field.
Ethica, for US was good but not GREAT wines. That said a few weeks later Haskels had a Caymus tasting which we missed that we heard was absolutely fantastic. One never knows but it is always a fun evening. Wonder what we have next month? We’ll know soon.
