Coalition restaurant
We go to 40 restaurants a year. In those 40 we don’t have two bad meals. That said some are just average, that is the Coalition. It might not be fair that we went to Pink Ivy of Hopkins last week, which was in a word amazing. It’s a tough comparison.
The Coalition is a block from 50th & France. But for some odd reason the crowd instead the expected beautiful people of Edina reminded me of the baseball hats you may see in Anoka. That is neither good or bad just an observation.
We had reservations like usual. But E had an interesting observation, we were able to get 7:15 Friday reservations the same day which is telling.
We waited to get a booth. The food was good but not great. E’s Paso Cab wine was better than my German Noir. Which we got AFTER the second course was presented, after being ask for again. That has never happened to us. We suspect they were running short of staff.
The goat cheese fried balls were good but not great. Our garden salad was passable.
Nothing on the menu jumped out as interesting so when the waiter said the special was Sea Bass, we thought sure. To be truthful E and I always split everything to keep our Friday bill around $100, so the presentation was in fact a ½ an entrée each. I’m not saying the amount of sea bass was smaller than my thumb but let’s just say, it may have been a reason of debate. And the price, which we never asked about, since all the other courses being $15 we assumed to be $25. Well, it was $40. That pushed our bill over $100.
The food was OK, the wine was OK. The service? Let’s just say they were trying their best. The Coalition does not make our top 100. But just beyond the wall of the Coalition toward 50th & France is Raag Progressive Indian Cuisine restaurant, we are not big in Indian food, but we thought it was exceptional.
