First of all, if you decide to go to the Aster House named after the great Fur baron family and one of the wealthiest families in America and John Jacob Astor IV that died on the Titanic, realize a few blocks away is the Aster Restaurant along St Anthony Old Main Street overlooking the falls. For those that have been out and about for a few decades, the Aster restaurant is in St Anthony Main and The Aster House is in what once was an old stable and the comedy Club in the now defunct River place. The place we saw Rod Snyder when he was higher than a kite on something perform his comedy act. Good I’m glad we got THAT straightened out.
How does one start a piece on just another nice restaurant, which the Aster House is. It’s warm and inviting, they have a good menu, the place is reasonably quiet, not overly priced and they have good food. My rare problem is nothing jumped out to say: Aster House is the perfect place for… it’s a nice place to spend a Friday night.
We arrived early as usual since we were drinking wine just across the river at North Loop. Wait Once! Do you want to take a nice walk with a beautiful view then have dinner? Aster House is your place!
For wines Aster House have five red wines by the glass, four whites, four sparkling and rose’ and a reasonable selection of $50+ a bottle wines. For us E had a Cab Sav from Columbia Valley, WA and I had an interesting wine with Sangiovese, Cab Sav & Merlot an interesting Italian mix. Both were good wines. E preferred hers and I preferred mine.
We started sharing a Fall Greens salad for $13 with aged cheddar, apple & celery, blueberries, sunflower and maple. It was one of the better salads we have had. That was followed by great dinner rolls. I wear a Libre 3 blood sugar sensor. I don’t know what I ate but something raised my blood sugar up 75 points all night. As bad as I am on occasion, usually by midnight it’s back to normal. We are guessing it was the great rolls. If you have diabetic issues, you MAY want to avoid them.
We never order steak when we are out for a dozen reasons. One reason is we have a great eight foot long grill just off our back deck that makes killer steaks, we try to keep the bill under $100 which is tough when you order steaks and steaks are difficult to split. And E likes her steak well done. That said we ordered a NY Strip for $42. It was a good steak.
Everyone was nice at the Aster House, and it was a nice place to eat. Our bill WITH the $42 steak and two wines was still only $105. So, if this summer you want to go on a nice romantic walk with an incredible view of Minneapolis and the river, The Aster House is your place. If they are full turn around and walk a few blocks and try the Aster, both are nice places. And enjoy, we DO!
