1029 Bar & Café

Did you ever go to a store or restaurant and find out when you got there it was closed for an unusual reason during normal business hours? We all have. What do you do at that point, go home? Well, if you are hungry you can’t always do that.
The other night after taking care of the Halloween crowd and tasting our Friday night tasting, E decided earlier in the week, we should go to one of our regulars Elements Pizza a block from the super McDonalds on the corner of Broadway and University in NordEast.

When we pulled into Elements Woodfired Pizza it was just like our first time, all the parking spots were open. It was raining and Halloween, so we thought nothing of it until we noticed the lights out and no one around. We said a prayer and looked at the note on the front door. The note said they would be closed for ten days to give their employees a break before Christmas season. Great for them, but where were WE gonna eat?

E & I are mover-inners so we have done our share of walking into places we have never been before. E saw the 1029 Bar & Café on the bottom of a Budweiser sign a block away on East River Road and said let’s eat there. I looked at the dreary night and said, “Sure why not?” We knew it would not be a Four Seasons night but hey it was close.

The 1029 bar is exactly like any of a thousand bars in the Midwest other than it doesn’t have a pool table. Oh, and one other thing, if it’s not payday weekend, donating a bra will get you a free drink. Guys, yours don’t count. A LOTTA memories hung over the bar.

So, we looked around the 1029 Bar during a Halloween Night and saw a lot of memories. Costumes you could only wear on that one occasion. Then a blur of signs. Remember ZIMA well they still do since it was introduced in 1996, what is that stuff anyway? We saw the roulette wheel and the pull tabs booth. The emblems of cops throughout the state and nation and a few pictures and trophies of sports teams.

For the menu E & I both had $14 burgers which were good. Fries are ALWAYS good at bars, so we started with that and instead of wine we have Captain & Coke a bar drink. Though they had Josh wines. Josh Cellars in Passo California are great people if you are out there.

Our bill with two burgers, fries and two drinks was only $55, and it was good. If you are in the area East River Road and Broadway the 1029 club is worth a stop.
