Spitz A taste of the NordEast
We like the Nordeast, BTW if you think that is spelled wrong, welcome to the Twin Cities… it’s correct. We are in the Nordeast most Friday evenings to taste wine. Surdyks is our number one cheese shop and all summer we ride bike in the area.
So, when someone on the East Metro foodies Facebook page recommended a Nordeast restaurant we said sure. I don’t like over thinking my reviews. If I do, it seems too much like work. Besides if you want to understand the chef and why his second-grade teacher did to them what they did, try another reviewer... we are having fun.
And that is exactly how one needs to look at a new restaurant. Spitz is a few blocks from Surdyks, on Hennepin by Samba, the White Castle, the big Holiday station and just before the big railroad bridge with Broadway on top. Yea, it’s next to the spooky via dock and that park where they play Cricket every Saturday Morning in the summer.
Spitz is Mediterranean small plate food. We like Mediterranean and small plate so why not? They do not serve wine. So, we had margaritas, they were good. And $5 each… get outa here! It’s a rare case but E passed the menu to me and said you take a guess!
I went through the menu and saw a Doner Salad, that party didn’t fair so well in the mid 1800s but I’m sure it’s not related, besides you’d need to buy an N… Any way the Doner Salad had: Feta, romaine, cabbage, onion, cucumbers, tomato, green pepper, banana peppers, kalamato olives, fried lavish strips, fried Pita strips, crispy garbanzos & tzatziki. All with Balsamic Tahini Dressing. Sure what the H.., I think we ate that in High school. We rarely get sick, and, in this case, we found an AMAZING dish… it was really good. Bet it was the Tzatziki, whatever that is! All for $14.50 It was enough sharing for an evening meal all by itself.
But we gotta spend more that $15 plus $10 in Margaritas so we went with the ever-popular Doquitos or Mediterranean Taquitos for $12.50 pushing our bill near $30! As you might know Doquitos come in Beef & Lamb which we had or Chicken & Cheese Lavash bread rolled with Zesty Feta, onion and then fried. Topped with Garlic Aioli, Feta, onions, green pepper, tomato, banana Peppers & olive. Another amazing course.
If you are looking for pretty food, it is not. It is more of a bowl of stuff, but very good and not very expensive. Our entire bill with TWO tasty margaritas was $41 plus Mpls tax. Our McDonalds bill was over $20 the other day and that’ll kill you! For those that say they can’t afford to eat eclectic you need to look more or read where we stumble upon after people recommend places. We were a block away and knew not where it was… thank you GPS & maps!
Spitz is a fun place. They even have games to play while you eat or drink. I always cheat so we can’t do THAT! And E doesn’t like reindeer games… so we eat & drink! I can see us returning, it’s a fun place with good reasonably priced food!
