Checkpoint Welding
Ever need something welded? E and I were looking for a carrier for our tandem electric bike. We ordered a $500 carrier that was supposed to work great, well except our electric bike and mount that attached to the bike, that would make it not work.
So, I scoured the internet for a tandem mount. Most of the people in the Tandem Club either have a Mini-van…. Let’s see $30K and a place to park the new vehicle… NOPE.
Or they take off the from wheel will all the attached cables and put it on the roof of the SUV. Have you SEEN the You Tube videos of popping wheelies and having the front wheel detach? NOT PRETTY!
So, since I have been in engineering nearly all my life I needed a better method. An electric bike is heavier than most bikes so a standard bike rack MIGHT or NOT work. Do I wanna risk our $5,000 electric bike on that?… NOPE!
So, the search begins. I found a mini-cycle rear mount for $200 on ebay. The ONLY problem was it was about a foot short. But it was designed for TWO Cycles so I had extra material. So, ALL I had to do was cut a foot off one rack and add it to the other…. BRILLIANT as Patrick would say!
The cutting went fine, but now for the welding. I looked around home and it turns out I don’t weld… well much! And this was welding aluminum… Not going to happen. So, I drove the pieces down to Broadway & Washington next to 94 just north of downtown Mpls. There in the REAL MAN part of town. Where you buy your steel and other big things, I found Checkpoint Welding.
I walked in with my pictures and said can you weld thing? They said sure it will be about a week and $150… DEAL! A week later my parts were done like they came off the factory floor. And the nice people even took VISA. WE are happy as hell and even if the bike is a few inches wider than our Explorer it works fine. Even drove past a cop on the freeway.
So if you are looking for someone to weld something. Give Checkpoint Welding a try. Worst that will happen is they will say NO! you know what they say: No!s don’t COST NOTHIN!
They are nice people, give them a try but they are Monday-Friday place!
